AI Visibility Index

Who the AI engines actually recommend.

When someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini which company to use, a handful of names come back. This index measures which ones, sector by sector, every month.

Why it exists

The shortlist is being written before you are in the room.

Search results show ten links. An AI answer shows three or four names and a reason. The engines choose those names from what they can read and trust, and most businesses have no idea whether they are on the list. This is the list.

01

Unbranded

Every question is one a real buyer would ask without naming a brand. The engines bring the names.

02

Four engines

Each question goes to every engine with live web search on, so the answers reflect what the engines read today, not what they were trained on.

03

Monthly

The same questions, re-asked every month. Rankings move, and the index records the movement.

The sectors

How to read it

A score, a rank, and the reasons behind both.

The visibility score runs from 0 to 100. It weights how often a brand is named across all answers in a sector (60%), how often it lands in the top three names (25%) and how often it is named first (15%). A brand at 70 or above is in most answers and usually leads them. A brand under 10 is close to invisible.

Every sector page also shows the exact questions asked and the sources the engines cited most, because the sources are the lever. If the engines are reading G2, a trade magazine and two comparison sites, those are the places a brand needs to be described well.

Mention share

Named in what proportion of answers

The plainest measure of presence. An engine that never names you cannot recommend you.

First mention

Named first, before any rival

Order matters in a short answer. The first name gets the click and sets the frame for the rest.

Per engine

Where you stand with each model

ChatGPT and Gemini rarely agree. A brand can lead one and be absent from another.

Movement

Change against the previous period

Rankings move month to month as the engines’ sources change. The index records every move.

What does the AI Visibility Index measure?

For each sector we put the same unbranded buyer questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini with web search on, then record which brands each answer names, in what order, and which sources it cites. The index reports how often each brand is named, how often it is named first, and a 0–100 visibility score that combines the two.

Why does it matter whether an AI engine names a brand?

A growing share of buying decisions now begins with a question to an AI assistant rather than a search box. When an engine answers "which CRM should a small business use" with four names, those four names get the enquiry. Brands that are not named are not considered. The index makes that selection visible so businesses can see where they stand and what the engines are reading.

How often is it updated?

Every sector is re-measured monthly. Each sector page shows the period it reflects and how rankings moved against the previous period.

Can I see my own brand or sector?

Brand pages exist for every brand named in any sector. If your sector is not covered yet, or you want the measurement run on your own buyer questions, Wall & Fifth can run a private study and work with you on getting cited.

Who publishes this?

Wall & Fifth, a UK digital product studio. The measurements are produced by GEOffice, our own AI-visibility tool. Our interest is practical: we help businesses redesign the pages and entity signals that AI engines rely on, and the index is how we show that the problem is real and measurable.

Wall & Fifth

Not on the list? That is fixable.

Wall & Fifth redesigns the pages, entity signals and third-party presence that AI engines rely on when they choose who to name. We measure first, change what matters, then measure again.
